Walgreens: Show Your Support!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

My family has used Walgreens as far back as I can remember. I would be more than a little livid if I was told I couldn’t fill my prescriptions with them because of a “middleman”. Unfortunately, thousands of customers are currently experiencing this due to a decision made by Express Scripts.

As of January 1, 2012, Walgreens is no longer part of Express Scripts’ pharmacy provider network. After an entire year of attempting to negotiate with Express Scripts, the contract with Walgreens expired on December 31, 2011.

Patients with certain prescription insurance plans managed by Express Scripts are affected! They are being forced to go elsewhere just so they can take advantage of in-network benefits. You can check the back of your insurance card or ask your local Walgreens pharmacist to find out if this change affects you.

Tricare, the health and prescription drug program for America’s military personnel, is one of Express Scripts’ clients. If you are covered under the Tricare network, I suggest reading this press release Walgreens and Express Scripts for more information.

Walgreens wants to help! They extended several offers to Express Scripts during negotiations including “an ironclad guarantee that Walgreens prices would match or even beat the average costs per adjusted prescription of all other pharmacies in the Tricare network”. Express Scripts refused.

In an effort to minimize any disruption, a special discount is being offered on annual membership for the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. An individual can join during their January promotion for only $5.00, or $10.00 for a family membership and receive savings on more than 8,000 brand name and all generic medications. Regular annual membership is $20 for an individual and $35 for a family.

If you are one of the several thousand people upset about not being able to use Walgreens, then you should consider contacting your local media and express your dissatisfaction.
