My "Maiden" Family
I am pretty much an open book. Ask me anything and I will be extremely honest with you. However, when I was recently asked "What does 'family' mean to you?", I became speechless. Then, I got emotional.
I consider my "maiden" family to be my parents, sisters and brother. What do they mean to me?
In fact, they mean so much to me I did this ten years ago. The "G" is the first letter in my maiden name. The colored "dots" are the birthstones for each person in my maiden family. Yes, this is a tattoo (minus the frame and title).
My Extended Family
To most people, "family" are those individuals you are related to by blood. To others, it can include very close friends who are like family. As an example, I have a really great friend I have known since high school. She is like a sister to me. We used to be inseparable. Spoke every day on the phone, got together when our schedules allowed, etc.
Then, life happened. We graduated from college, she moved on to graduate school and I moved out of state, got married, and had kids.
A spouse and the members of his/her family typically become a part of yours. Since I am separated from my husband, this no longer applies to me.
My Blogging Family
I also consider some blogging collegues part of my family. Matter of Cents launched in January 2011 and, since then, I have formed relationships with a select few for whom I would do anything. I would even go as far as to consider one or two my virtual sisters. I haven't met them in person yet, but hoping that will happen soon.
