Our First Year: An Elf On The Shelf Christmas Tradition

I first heard about the Elf On The Shelf Christmas tradition a couple of years ago. I was immediately intrigued and thought having an Elf around to “watch” the kids and report back to Santa sounded fun. As much as I wanted one, I decided to wait until I could learn more about it and follow through on the process.

Watching the movie with my children last week definitely helped me to prepare.

Our Elf arrived today!

Elf On The Shelf Tradition

Please welcome “Cello”. My kids love music and chose to name their Elf after a musical instrument.

Gift set includes: A North Pole scout elf, a hard-bound children’s book and a keepsake box. I read the book to the kids as soon as they got home from school. They have absolutely fallen in love with Cello. So much so, my oldest son who is 7 1/2 already told me he doesn’t want him to leave. He asked me if he could write Santa a letter to make an exception and let Cello stay with us all year.

The Rule

There is only one rule they must follow when it comes to Cello. Do not touch the Elf or he will lose his magic.

So, I let them touch the book instead.

Elf On The Shelp

I am really looking forward to an exciting three weeks. The kids will wake up each morning and try to find where Cello landed upon his return from the North Pole every night. Where he will be remains to be seen. No pun intended.

Does (or did) your family cherish the Elf On The Shelf Christmas tradition?

  1. We don’t have a tradition, but I love seeing everyone else’s. Holiday traditions with your family are important to have. Can’t wait to see what your elf is up to!

Thanks for the feedback! I am still on the fence about whether to do a weekly recap or a longer one at the end. But I will definitely share.

  2. This is the 2nd year we have had our Tensile. Hes so cute. My older girls help me figure out where he will be the next morning. So when my boys get up they hurry to get dressed so they can find him. They even tell him bye before they leave for school. Tensile has had a couple of days that he has to report bad news to Santa but tonight Santa will send a note back with Tensile for them. Lol anyways he goes everywhere. We found him in the freezer one morning trying to get pancakes. Lol have fun with your Cello.

Thank you! That is so funny (in the freezer). This morning, my oldest found Cello grabbing a treat from the candy jar. LOL! The kids love it so far and are having fun, which makes it that much better for me.

      • This morning ours was sitting on top of this little candle holder I have had for years. No candle in it but he has a marshmallow in his hands and chocolate on his face. He was trying to make S mores we think. LOL. I love it as much as the kids do I think. When the boys learn about Santa were just gonna take turns hiding him and letting the rest of the kids find him. But my youngest is only 5 so hopefully we have a few years before that happens
